Coach the Labrador Retriever has become a guardian angel for one teenager who needs help monitoring her blood levels to stay alive.

Elle Shaheen, 15, has Type 1 diabetes and is at risk of a seizure or permanent brain damage if her blood sugar is too low or too high.

Coach is a diabetes alert dog, and can smell changes in blood sugar in order to signal her immediately.

Elle’s parents said they first noticed a change in their daughter about seven years ago.

“She was very irritable at times for no real reason,” mother Stefany Shaheen told ABC News America.

“We couldn’t really explain it. She was having trouble in her math class, which happened to fall after breakfast.

It takes about 2000 hours to train a diabetes alert dog.http---prod.static9.net.au-_-media-2015-08-26-09-50-150826_raw_doghelper2.ashx-w=603
